First-Past-The-FIXEDPOST

How they voted

The voter gets a first choice (FC) and a second choice (SC).  Candidates are not eliminated.  They are declared inactive (and may be re-activated).  The ballots of an inactive candidate will be redistributed  using the SC.  The Fixed-Post is set at 50%+1 of the total ballots cast.  A strict (3 phase) counting procedure is used to ensure that the candidate who recieved the most FC votes has the earliest opportunity to reach the Fixed-Post .  Every candidate will be able to count all his original FC votes along with all the second choice votes from ballots that did not have that candidate as the FC. If no candidate reaches the Fixed-Post the candidate who gets the closest will be declared the winner.

In the riding the total of 100 FC votes breaks down as follows:(phase 1)

  • Albert: 34 votes
  • Betty: 33 votes
  • Caitlyn: 32 votes
  • Daniel: 1 vote

The Fixed-Post is set at 51.

Daniel is declared inactive. If the potential SC vote (we don't know what it is yet) went to Caitlyn she would not have enough to reach the Fixed-Post so Caitlyn is also declared inactive. Betty could reach the Fixed-Post if all the potential SC votes were for Betty. Betty keeps her FC votes and the Potential SC ballots  are redistributed (Phase 2).

  • Albert: 34+0 votes
  • Betty: 33+0 votes
  • Caitlyn: 0+1 votes
  • Daniel: 0+32 vote

The known second choice votes are 32 for Daniel, 1 for Caitlyn, 0 for Betty and 0 for Albert. Betty is declared inactive.  Because there is now only one active candidate, phase 3 is started.  The potential SC ballots from Betty are counted.

  • Albert: 34+0 votes
  • Betty: 0+0 votes
  • Caitlyn: 0+1 votes
  • Daniel: 0+55 vote

Betty's known SC votes all went to Daniel.  Albert cannot go any higher and his highpoint is set at 34. The potential SC votes from Albert have yet to be counted. Betty is reactivated (she takes back her FC votes) and Albert is de-activated.

  • Albert: 0+0 votes
  • Betty: 33+0 votes
  • Caitlyn: 0+1 votes
  • Daniel: 0+56 vote

Albert's known SC votes went to Daniel. At this point we know  where every SC vote goes. Betty's highpoint is 33. Caitlyn's highpoint is also 33. Daniel's highpoint is 100.

Final Results

Daniel is elected with support of 100% of the voters (99 SC votes +1 FC vote).

100% of the voters in the riding are happy.

Note: At all times, the total vote count remains at 100. No votes are ever lost.
